Hokus Pokus

Posted in Products & furniture design, Vintage furniture by zigideluxe on 31/03/2011

Here another fine example of a vintage kids furniture piece I recently bought. Named Hokus Pokus, this multifunctional furniture was manufactured in Sweden by AB Bjärnum Möbelfabriker. All in one, it is a high chair that becomes a rocking chair with steering wheel or a desk with seat, depending on how you flip it around. Every aspect and form has a purely functional ‘raison d’être’ which gives the object its visual complexity and its overall shape. This uncompromising and honest approach linking form and function makes this unusual object in my view very interesting.

I am desperate to purchase a Hokus Pokus chair. Can you help?
My parents owned one in the 80’s, my sisters & I all used it. Of course my parents unwittingly passed it on to others & we can not trace it’s whereabouts. Ours was yellow plastic with brown vinyl seat.
    Many thanks

Hi. I lived on a kibbutz in Northern Israel in the late 1970s that made hokus-pokus chairs! We had one when our kids were little, but later a cousin who borrowed it didn’t save it.

You’re absolutely right– the economy and cleverness of the design were fantastic. I loved that it had such a small footprint (unlike super-sized American high chairs), and it was so incredibly functional and fun.

I’m desperate to get another one now that I have a grandchild. Can you help? They are fantastic, and I have a strong sentimental attachment as well. THANK YOU.

Hi Susan, thank you for your message, it is indeed a fantastic design and I had quite a lot of messages over time from people looking to find one. As far as I know it is a swedish design ( that was the label on mine, but might have been produced in different places) around the 70’s. Occasionally I come across them on Facebook Marketplace locally, but I suggest you look on this swedish auction website https://auctionet.com/en or catawiki.com and you register the key words to be notified if something comes up. Best regards, Georges
